Standing
13 stories high
and encompassing over 1.6 million square feet, Bank of
America stadium is the home of the Carolina Panthers NFL
team. Spanning 29 acres contiguous to uptown Charlotte,
NC, this project represents a pinnacle of achievement
for Starr Electric Company. Bank of America Stadium remains
one of the largest and most notable construction projects
in the southeast. Viewed nearly every Sunday in the fall
by NFL fans around the world, this stadium is at least
on par with any other athletic facility in the world.
Starr Electric completed the construction of the electrical
systems in a joint venture in the fall of 1996. “The
speed of construction was absolutely incredible,”
stated Dennis Norris. “It
seemed at times as if the project was literally growing
before our eyes.”
The physical size of the project presented many logistical
problems. Steve McClannan, as field superintendent, was
in charge of the entire workforce and was responsible
for a plan to maintain a smooth operation. The project
was designed in four quadrants, each with separate power
sources and very little crossover. Separate crews were
established to work in the quadrants and on various floors
throughout the building. Each crew was managed by a foreman
or lead man and reported to a superintendent. The workforce
peaked at 130 workers.
In spite of the large workforce, accidents were kept to
a minimum. All participants were very proud of the safety
record on this project. The joint venture was awarded
the safety subcontractor of the month on several occasions
and feels it maintained a commitment to safety in every
aspect.
This project was especially challenging due to the fact
that the electrical documents were not completed until
early 1995. Coupled with the many changes and modifications
and considering the schedule faced, a plan was formed
to insure that the project could maintain its fast pace.
The joint venture of FN Thompson and Turner Construction
did an excellent job of balancing the needs of the owner,
the general contractor, and Starr Electric, with the utmost
integrity and fairness to all parties involved.
